With respect to the pinion shaft nut, Jack has told me to (and I quote) "give it all you got" when it comes to tightening it. Twice the spec value (from memory the spec is 90 ft-lb) is what he told me. He cautioned about doing that with the other two shafts, but the pinion nut- crank it baby! Once you do that, you THEN check your R&P backlash and adjust if necessary.
I'll tell you though, I'm a little unclear on the latter adjustment. The literature all talks about shims beside the thick washers (which are big shims themselves) beside the big and small ring gear bearings. You're supposed to transfer side to side to adjust. I can't seem to find ANY when I disassemble a gearbox. All I see is the thick ones. I've asked Jack and he says they should be there. Jim Williams also mentions them. What am I missing???
I'm sure you all know of the other respected gearbox rebuilders in the US:
Tom Donney in Iowa.
Bud Clark in California.
Jack Ashcraft in Oregon (already mentioned).
And I hear of a couple other guys with the tools and experience to do it.
So here's something that I'd LOVE to do: go visit Jack L. and watch him do a rebuild from start to finish, videotape the process, and put together a DVD. And do the same for a performance V-4 rebuild. What a way to spend a week of vacation!! Capture as much as possible before he retires! That would be cool!
