Seal is out. Just remove the freewheel selector & gear?

I figured out the clutch shaft seal removal. (From the transmission end of the shaft, the clutch bearing finally slid up enough for me to see that I could get to the final snap ring. Once that was out I could get to the real of that seal & I just tapped the seal out from the transmission side)
Now, with everything out, I dont see why I would put the freewheel selector knob and selector gear back in at all -- Especially given that its clear the selector for itself was part of the problem. In fact, it's unclear to me how that selector fork doesn't grind eternally against the toothed freewheel selector gear for everybody. The fork is stationary and presses against the toothed gear, and the toothed gear spins. There was no other bearing on the shaft other than the clutch bearing by the seal (well, and the little needle bearing on the tip).
So, given that the freewheel is permanently neutered -- is it ok to just remove the rest of the freewheel stuff and cover the top hole with a fabricated metal plate (which might also provide a handy dipstick gauge ability, I think)
