Balance shaft bearings are *brand new*. I did a full engine rebuild a couple years ago, but haven't really put many miles (less than 100 probably) on the engine since (I know, it's shameful).
When I rebuilt the engine, I added seats for the heads, and went with the 1700 pistons -- other than that no real engine 'upgrades' - just lots of replaced stuff. Pretty much, if it was replaceable on the engine, I did it (myself, thankuverymuch!) :-D . If I had known that a new gear set wasn't too pricey, I would have replaced the gears then.
Depsite having very quiet tranny gears (well, other than the clutch/reverse & freewheel selector grinding) I guess I'll heed everyones advice (including Jack Lawrence's) and pull that rear cover to check those nuts. Might as well while I'm replacing everything else go ahead and check it all. Those poppet balls dont look *too* intimidating... (famous last words.)
Thx again, and I'll post more pictures if I come across anything as exciting as the welded freewheel.
