I don't know what you did to search for an exhaust leak, but I just plug the exhaust pipe with a gloved hand or rag while someone else looks for the leaks. You should know very quickly if you have a leak. Don't keep it plugged for too long at a time or the pressure build up might damage something. Bad engine or trans mounts could cause an increase in engine noise. The exhaust system not being properly mounted or suspended could also be a factor.
