I thought I would report back here.
I finished rebuilding the transmission on my 1968 96 V4. I did not have a transmission jig. I understand that it would certainly have simplified the process.
The original complaint was extremely noisy (failure noisy) bearings that was intermittent.
Upon disassembly there were several problems. The needle bearings on 2nd gear were trashed, and the pinion nut had backed off slightly (though not chewed up the rear case).
I had difficulty locating the OEM bearings, for example, the rear pinion shaft that is original a double row bearing split bearing, I opted for a double row standard bearing.
I was unable to locate one of the needle bearings, a 25x29x28 and instead opted for 2x 26x28x13 with a 2mm spacer.
Once the bearings were located, reassembly was not difficult. I had 2 gearboxes so I used the combination of shims I had to get the proper pinion backlash set. I did not have a tool so it was mostly guess work. However, now that it is installed and driving, I do not have noticable gear noise. That may be fine for the nonce, or it may be I was just lucky and its fine for now.
I made all the gaskets by hand with a punch and scissors - it worked fine. For the axle boots and input shaft, I located similar ones with the proper dimensions online from I believe a snowmobile.
Installation into the vehicle was uneventful. I replaced spark, cap and plugs, as well as most of the heater hose, but otherwise left it as is. Once the fuel hit the carb - it fired right up.
I noticed the car had a weber 34 ICH instead of what I thought was a Solex. This made adjusting it easy enough, though I still need to fine tune it. For now it starts, drives, and idles without complaint.
I pulled the passenger side axle to make aligning transmission easier into the rear mount and that worked nicely.
Now it seems to be operating smoothly. I did note one of the outer CV axles boot is broken, and I am hearing clicking on turning. That's a job for another day.
Having done that, I think it is now time to move onto the body work for this vehicle - of which the windshield will be the first attack point. I was supplied a replacement windshield and gasket from Mr. Tom Donney and they appear to be in good shape. I'll report back.
I do need to locate some trickier bits. I have already a fender and hood to go on the vehicle, but I need a passenger side mirror, passenger side tail light. Both of which I am having a hard time locating.
Thanks all
