1980 99 GLi: Correct Fuel Pump Placement?

Recently I put a new fuel pump in my 99. Ever Since then it has had a stalling problem when making left turns. This happens when the tank is a little less than half full. At first I thought I didn't install it deep enough into the tank so I did it again. I'm having the same problem. Does the fuel pump opening have to be facing a specific direction? How deep can I place it in the tank? Can it touch bottom or will it suck up crud.? Thanks a lot. Mike
