There is a spec Mike, I'll try and look it up tonight...and it is different on the 80. Check in the tank, is there a plastic "tray" that the pickup sits down in? That should have a hard, black plastic return line clipped on it in such a way that the tray is kept full by the fuel coming back from the fr of the car. If that is not present, you will starve regardless of pump orientation. The mouth of the pickup faces backwards and about 45' to the right (pass side) and the depth of the pump(which I'll look up for you) basically sits that pickup right into the hole in the tray, on the bottom of the tank. Common problem is for Joe Service center to pull/replace the pump and slap it back in there wrong. Hope this helps.
