If you're talking a V4-powered 96 rather than a 99, you don't need shims; there's a hex adjuster for each valve and you just turn it. Otherwise, procedure is as ROSS described. There's a specific crank position for measuring the clearance on each valve, so you do need a shop manual to be sure you're getting the setting right. Oh, yeah, the valves can easily be far off enough to be noisy without making the car run too badly, so you do need to check.
If this IS a 99 and the valves are adjusted OK, another thing that makes a lot of clattering noise from the same area is a loose timing chain. But that's a completely different can of worms...
