First you need to get a good manual, then clean the top of your engine before removing the cam cover. Pull the plugs to make it easier to rotate the engine by hand. Remove the cam cover and measure all of the valve clearances with a feeler gauge when the low part of the lobe is pointing toward the lifter. Rotate the engine to each valve position. Write down each valve's clearance. If any are out of spec, determine how much you need to add or subtract to get it within specs. (Note: exhaust specs are different from intake specs; be sure you know which one you are measuring.) Follow the instructions in the manual for removal of the camshaft. Pull each lifter in turn (don't mix them up because they are worn to the particular lobe of the camshaft) and measure the thick ness of the adjusting puck underneath it with a micrometer. Add or subtract the amount you determined (above) to determine the thickness of the puck you need to install. Obtain the proper pucks from your dealer or nearest Saab repair garage. DO NOT put little pieces of feeler gauge beneath the pucks to add thickness. (Yes, Virginia, people are actually that foolish.) The Fiat 124 to which someone had done this needed both camshafts and a set of lifters, a valve job, cam carriers and new adjusting pucks. It would be a considerably more expensive a job on a Saab than it was on the Fiat.
