There are a bunch of reasons why I prefered the 96. The 99 is a suitable car, but it's just not quite the same.
Front-wheel-drive.
Dual-diagonal-braking ought to narrow the field of replacement options considerably.
Manual transmission will also narrow the field since only something like 11% of all cars sold in the US now have them. Insist on a column mounted shifter and it narrows the field even more.
A properly fitting seatbelt system with a shoulder harness that doesn't lie across your neck. ...And no stupid airbag.
15" wheels and a minimum 7" of ground clearance with two adults in the front seats.
Comfortable seats.
A flat passenger compartment floor.
Legroom in the back seat for somone over 4'6" tall.
A full sized spare tire.
A trunk that will hold more than a six-pack.
A rear seat that folds flat for large loads.
In other words, there is _NO_ substitute for a 30+ year old SAAB.
