Thanks for your ideas. A lot of folks here and beyond contributed. If the gatekeeper will let me, I'll post the whole list. Maybe I'll break it up into bits.

SPECIFICATIONS FOR REPLACEMENT TO '68 SAAB 96

1) Handling and driveability
Front wheel drive
Rugged frame and suspension for mountain driving
Adequate gearing for mountain driving
Clearance 8" min
Ratio of clearance to track width should be no less than 1:6

2) Safety
Dual diagonal hydraulic brakes
Wheels at least 15"
Disk brakes on at least the fronts
Emergency brake applied to rear wheels
Properly fitted shoulder seatbelts that don't cross the neck
Belts firmly attached to frame, not the door
Full sized spare tire
Full sized spare tire compartment to put it in
Peekaboo headrests for rear visibility
If there is a third brake light, it should not block rear view
Hood must not block view of the road ahead
Manual shut-off for any on-board explosive devices
Gas tank near rear center, and shielded underneath
Fuel filler pipe on opposite side from muffler and converter
Adequate compression braking so we don't toast the brakes coming off Palomar by the west grade
Brakes and steering that remain fully functional if engine quits
Stand-away bumpers that don't collect snow to block signal lights
NO guillotine windows
Vehicle MUST be designed to remain under control with a sudden tire failure
