Did your unfortunate friend have the overheating mishap right AFTER "some of his dashboard instruments had failed" ? As in, the first longish drive after the instruments mysteriously threw in the blanket?
I'm under the strong impression it is so, and I have a tiny idea about what happened...
When fitting the electric pump, your friend tapped into the wiring harness at a place not dimentioned for the extra load. From your posting it is even possible that he did NOT put a relay in this circuit. If both the instruments fail, it is because they're no longer being fed with power. Three things can cause this:
- Fuse no 4 blown. This one also feeds the wipers.
- Ignition-relay blown. This one shuts down the wipers, the fan and window demist.
- The wire somewhere in this circuit is torn or burnt off.
All these things can happen if you overload this circuit. As in, fitting a heavy power consumer in this circuit. Such as an electric waterpump...
So this circuit shuts down. Then the pump stops. The car can still be driven shorter distances without the driver noticing anything wrong. The temp gauge is off duty, remember? No water-circulation means the heater will stay cold. Since your friend lives in Australia, I doubt if he tried to use it. I've been told the clima there is quite the opposite of what we in butt-freezing Scandinavia have.
Anyway, the car can be driven for quite some time if it's only for shorter commutings. But when you go for a longish trip the "heat is on" ...
Makes sense?
Karl.
