Brian, I think you should follow Andy's advice and contact Chip. Your fortunate to have a specialist near by. There a few options you could take up with him. It's possible that he may have a motor/tranny complete. As Andy stated, it's tough to inherit another problem, but Chip would know the condition of the motor. If your father is still available to help, perhaps you could do the motor swap together. If you can get a good running used motor/tranny, and rent a hoist, you could have it swapped out in just a few days. I've removed/installed these drivetrains 6 times now, and it gets easier each time. The last one I pulled while stripping out a car, took me just under two hours by myself. If you can get a running drivetrain, this could be very easy for you with a little help. Then maybe you could possibly rebuild/paint and detail your current one and re-install that. The Haynes service manual gives a really good breakdown of the whole thing. It may sound overwelming to you, but it's actually quite easy (awesome Saab engineering) and fun to do. Best of luck.
