Look for a 97 or 98, models with suspension improvements, larger brakes and better reliability than their predecessors.
The SE model has better handling than the S, plus the turbo makes a HUGE difference in driveability and fun quotient. Run, don't walk, away from the V6. These engines were a pox on the house of Saab, profit-margin crap cobbled together from the Opel/Vauxhaull European lines of GM.
The turbo should last you 100K+ miles with regular oil changes, but if you blow it, you're out $700 bucks for a new one (less for a recon) and the installation, say, another $3-400. If the timing belt on the V6 goes, you'll have to look under couch cushions for $3,500 for the engine alone.
The auto tranny is pretty solid, so no worries there. Just make sure it shifts smoothly whe engaged and dosen't slip when you put the spurs to it. Have an independent mechanic check it, or insist on a Saab-certified pre-owned car.
Things to expect at that mileage: Probably need new front rotors and pads. They start to go about 65K miles.
You may need a muffler flex pipe, which seem to croak at the same interval.
Your mechanic should check the front struts for wear. Expect about a grand in nicel-and dime things for the first few thousand miles, then you're likely to have smooth sailing.
