Now that you've replaced the leads, cap and plugs, the usual sources have been dealt with. I think there is a clue when you say there was water in the area of the battery. The coil lives behind the battery and it still sounds like a high tension leak. Take the lead off at the coil and clean and spray the coil and connectors. Replace the lead (you did renew this lead along with the plug leads?) and give it a go. Oh and a taped up hose doesn't sound right, but I'm not sure that would give rise to what sounds like an electrical damp problem.
