Does the grinding noise whenever the clutch depressed indicate a bad throwout bearing? As I also mention below, the cable itself has a good amount of play in it right now (adjustment has not helped). So, Ed G is asking if it is just the cable. Well, the NOISE is what really bothers me. But, it obviously is not di-engaging properly with that much play in the cable. How did the cable and the throwout bearing go all at once? Or is the bearing bad enough that it doesn't let the arm fully retract to keep the tension on the cable?

Either way, a new cable and clutch are probably in order (I am tempted to get the clutch done, but do the cable myself). I feel comfortable enough with the engine to not pull it and address things in there right now. There is a slight "whine" in the engine that may be the balance shaft stuff, though. But I am hoping that auto-rx and good attention to things will give me a good amount of life left before this causes problems.

But I am open to advice. I bought the car 9 months ago for $4200. Should I pay $2500 and not have to worry about any of this stuff for a long time?

As you can tell my inner mind is spinning on this thing trying to determine the best course of action.
