Thank you, Anders.
That makes sense concerning why there is no tension on the cable (I can see about 1 inch of free play past the fork on the cable). The pressure plate fingers (I have at least seen one of these) act to keep tension on the fork (?) in their relaxed state. So, probably the pressure plate is shot, too. (?).
If I pull forward on the fork, it will return to its resting state, but that again is with the cable in a slack state. The plate does not keep the tension going in the other direction. Do I sort of have this right?
I have a friend who, among other things, convinced me to buy a Saab, and he has done a clutch replacement on an 87 9000 with minimal tools and a bit of patience. He is trying to convince me to give it a shot. His main argument is that there is no special "alignment" or calibration needed. It is physical parts that when put in correctly will work with no need to "fine tune" with specialized equipment. Is this a fair assessment? Should I contemplate this myself? I do have the time, money is a bit tight, and I may just enjoy it. I will at least think it over.
thanks so much for everyone's help today.... this site sure is a great help.
