Pulsing at low speeds... NORMAL OR NOT?

This is my first saab and a lot of the unusual things it does have been labeled normal by those of you who know these cars. That being said, this may be nothing at all but I wanted to ask just in case.
In first gear or reverse, the engine pulses... sounds like its lunging. It speeds up very fast and drops again. I'm not sure the tach registers this or not but it is unmistakable even to the least experienced listener. My idle seems high as well (1100-1200) but I have been told my iac would have nothing to do with a dysfunction once I'm in a power gear. Honestly, it does sound just about the same as the slightly erratic idle.
I've considered replacing the iac but I'd hate to think it is perfectly fine. I have cleaned my iac twice in the last three months, replaced vacuum hose, I have a k and n filter, recently ran auto-rx cycle, etc... etc...
At any rate, it is a 1995 900s with an auto trans.
Is this normal or not? If its not normal, what do you think is going on here? Any advice?
Thanks...
