Welcome to the club. Almost all of us V6'ers have recurring valve cover leaks. I've never heard your dealer's explanation before. Sounds like BS. I've never heard your indie mechanic's explanation either. I wouldn't try any mods to the PCV system either. Sounds risky, but moreover, most of us here believe it won't address the problem.

The issue is that the valve covers are plastic and they warp over time. They just don't make a good fit, even when resealed properly. Some of us here on the board have experimented with different kinds of sealant. A little bit of black silicone seems best; permatex hylomar seems OK, maybe not quite as good. Anders recommends replacing the valve COVERS in addition to the gaskets, a fine idea, but it will cost you about $110 per cover. See linked post below.

I understand your frustration. The best way to deal with this and not go broke is to reseal them yourself. The front is easy but the rear is somewhat more labor intensive--so that's why you have to pay the dealer a lot. Still the rear is definitely a DIY job if you have tools and a few hours and some nerve. BTW, you can save a lot of cash just by buying the valve cover gaskets yourself from a TSN sponsor (try eeuroparts.com). You can get a pair (enough for ONE cover) for about $20 instead of the $50 or so that the dealer gets per pair. Add that to the labor cost and you'll see the DIY savings racking up.
