Well, I'm no mechanic, but just from cruising this bb I've never heard the theory about blow by. Just guessing, but woudln't that signify a bad ring or valve seal too? More likely just the repair didn't take, not necessarily poorly done, but the first time I did mine they lasted about six months, this second time its now over a year, maybe I got better with experience.
For $1000 you can get yourself a supreme, gold plated set of tools then you have them for the other repairs you'll want to do in the future. Then you can go to work on Monday with your hands all greasy and knicked up, look cool for everyone and impress them that you "rebuilt your engine" over the weekend. Could it be you just never noticed them leaking for 9 years?
Lets assume it is blow by. If it took 9 years for the crud to build up, for an hour or so of time you can replace the two hoses and clean out the hole where the hoses hook up, then get another 9 years. The saab service manual for V6 does not call for a gasket sealant to be used on the V6 but we here all do, maybe that's the problem, they didn't use a sealant. use permatex black, not too much, not too little, and me and Derek have been having luck with that.
If you're not comfortable DIY the first time, do you have a friend who works on cars?
Good luck.
