You probably don't have to replace your tranny. The play you mentioned will cause the oil seal to go out sooner though. It sounds just like my tranny actually. When I had my tranny out, the guys at Scantech noticed that my inner bushing where the driver side axle goes in was very worn. It was quite apparent because there was quite a bit of play when I wiggled the axle at the junction to the tranny. There shouldn't be any play at all. I trust the guys at Scantech, so I had them put a new bushing in along with new seals. They said that I could leave it as is and just deal with the leak, but they didn't say anything about it actually scrapping the tranny altogether.
This wasn't causing vibration though. Do the vibes get worse when you accelerate or when you ease off of the gas?
I know this is an obvious thing to check, but have you doublechecked that your rims aren't bent or out of balance (as wheel weights have a habit of flying off)? A visual inspection, even with the wheels off the car might not catch a gradual warpage. You may want to bring it a goodyear or something and have them check your front wheels to make sure they aren't bent or out of balance. I've noticed that this car is much more sensitive to such things than other cars I've driven.
If your CV boots and such seem to be in good shape and you haven't driven the car long distances with them torn open, the tripod bearing may be fine. As I remember, wear was caused when foreign matter got into the cv joint. I'd worry about the little things first and then move onto the cv joint.
