Hi Sung,
thanks for the info. The vibration started when I gently kurbed the left side wheel (~15 mph) and so I had the balance on that wheel checked and it was still spot-on. I could have the other one checked too, but since I can still see the weights in place and it'll cost me a (small) chunk of cash I'm not in a hurry to throw more money at it.
What I've done is to put the car up on axle stands on one side, and let one wheel turn up to an estimated 65 mph, and watch for movement. Interestingly there's quite a bit, even on the side I *know* is balanced. The wheel may be out of round, I saw some movement that might suggest that, but it shouldn't have changed except for the left-side kurbing, and if it was bent I'd expect that to show as a shift in the balance.
What I noticed was that the two wheels behaved differently, and the right side wheel (the one I haven't had the balance re-checked, and the one with the wobbly inner CV) showed some up/down vibration that came right through to the steering wheel. The rim looked straight, but the tire had a bit of wobble. These are almost new Nokian NRe's, which I've had and liked before.
I've also checked the strut mount using the scrub test, there's almost no movement at all and the rubber looks absolutely fine.
I've had a balance problem on a previous car that took a while to track down, but I got it in the end. It only happened when I put new tyres on it, and the balance done by the shop wasn't much cop. I took it back and they rebalanced it (it was miles out!) and then noticed a dent in the alloy rim, which they kindly knocked out for free with a soft hammer. However, they didn't rebalance it after changing the shape, so it was miles off again. On the *third* balancing attempt it was spot on, smooth as you like.
I'm sure this can be cured, but it's where to go next... The wierd thing is that sometimes you just don't notice it. It needs a really smooth road and some accelleration to show up, then it *really* shows up.
