it's been a long week. i had my 96 900s 2.3 135k 5spd in the shop for regular maintenance, plus a few extras - 1) where's the leak coming from 2) what's up with the emergency brake.
the leak, he said, is from the distributor. reading this forum, i see that's not an uncommon problem. he said it should be replaced soon. (i posted a question to you, ordered one from eeuroparts, on it's way). friday night i went to see a concert north of phila (i live 2hrs away in hershey). when i came out after the concert, the car would not start. it cranked very strongly, but just wouldn't catch. tried kickstarting it, no good.
so, the next morning it was towed to a local gas station - i told him about the distributor and he said that's a possibility. he said there was no spark at the distributor wires. so i found one (i know, one is being mailed to me as we speak) at Great Britan's (dearler and shop). i started replacing it, when i noticed that the cable that hooks to the side of the distributor was not attached. i'm guessing that the guy at the original shop didn't push it in all the way? anyway, so i'm thinking that i'm saved, because this whole problem was caused by the loose/unhooked connector. i finish replacing, but i get the same results. cranks, but doesn't start. the mechanic said that i was getting spark now, so the problem is obviously somewhere else.
so, first, any ideas? i had it towed to Great Britans and so they'll fix it, but i'm curious to hear what you think. i got a rental car and came back home...also, what is that cable? what does it do?
other issues - the emergency brake - there are many thread on this forum about the emergency brake that sticks from gunk and rust - and that's what happened to mine as far as i know. so my mechanic replaced/cleaned everything back there. and for the first few days, it was great - i pull the emergency brake - and the handle stops about haflway. but then i noticed that it started behaving oddly again - i would pull it all the way up with little resistance. i'm guessing this isn't enough info to go on, but any thoughts?
if it's worth anything, i think i'm dumping the mechanic i've been using (indie). i stopped using the shop in favor of the indie, but i think he's overcharging a bit (450 for the distributor, replaced, i did it myself yesterday for 250 - took about 8 minutes). secondly, this brake issue, in addition to the distributor connector being unhooked, i'm not sure i trust him.
it's been a rough year - i've put about $3000 into repairs since july (1300 for inspection issues, 1000 for last week, plus 4 new tires, and i have no idea what this is going to cost me - plus the indie said that i have a loose tranny mount (because of oil from the distributor?) and my flex pipe has a hole in it (i confirmed this visually). ouch. i love the car but i'm guessing this year will cost me more than the thing is worth...
anyway, i greatly appreciate your time and advice on these issues.
