Another Possibility: Coolant Temp Sensor ... ? I had the exact problems with my N/A 2.3L last year. I cleaned the IAC (or AIC) 3 times, swabbed the TB, tracked down some vacuum leaks, etc., etc. All were good things to do, but nothing really solved the problem. Just last month I replaced the coolant temp sensor (on advice from C900 board regarding another car I was working on). The sensor is on the intake manifold to the right of the TB. It seems that this sensor lets the computer know when to trust the values it is getting from the air mass meter - it is unreliable when cold. At least on the C900, I noticed significant instant improvement. On my NG900, I have had no more problems since replacing it, but I can't say for certain that this fixed it .... It did look heavily corroded when replacing it, though, so it couldn't have hurt.
SOmeone else feel free to correct any wrong assumptions I have made on how the system works ... but I am fairly confident that something more than just the AIC and TB getting gummed up were causing problems, at least in my case.
