I could not find anything in Haynes for a resistance valve, but the sensor is a solid state device, so perhaps thats asking the wrong question.
The WIS states that if the sensor signal is lost when the engine is running, it will throw a CEL for that. If the sensor does not work when starting, I do not know the outcome, but I can't see why it would not CEL for that when it does see from the CPS that the engine is cranking. If the engine starts, the camshaft postition sensor must be working ok. Note that once the ECU aquires the timing phase info for the cams and crank, that the ECU should be able to run perfectly well without that signal. So I expect that one could remove the connector on an idling engine and not have any issues other than a CEL. The sensor signals when cyl 1 is TDC and ready for firing. The signal pulses 0V and 5V. Probably need scope to see this and a meter may be useless. After the ECU knows the cam/crank phasing ,the crankshaft position sensor is all that is needs for timing.
