Comments based on over 26 years of using and selling AMSOIL synthetics:
At that mileage, I recommend using a flush. The best quick flushes I know of are made by AMSOIL and BG--neither will cause chunks of stuff to come off. If you want to take a few thousand miles to clean things up, try Auto-Rx.
If you don't, or won't, use a flush-- go ahead and change. Watch for any sign of sudden increase in oil consumption. If you see this, change the filter and top off. You might want to change the filter after 2-3,000 miles anyhow. If the oil gets nasty looking, go ahead and change the first batch after 5-6,000 miles.
Having said this, I bought my 88 9KT with 87,000 miles on it. The shop dropped in AMSOIL 10W-30, no flush. I ran it a year, about 10K, and it was fine. I may have added as much as 1/2 qt in that time.
