Hey Alyssa,
OK, the link will connect you to my original post in Nov '03 when I just finished the tranny cleaning & started the engine cleaning on my '90 900. I added a forward link to that post in Nov '04 ("completion post") which takes you to my last service on both this tranny & my son's '85 900 tranny. Both are 5sp manuals.
As for p/s, I've only used it in the '85's 'cuz it's the only one that was leaking. Actually, the engine, tranny, & p/s were all leaking pretty badly when we bought the car in Sep '03. I was constantly adding oil to all three systems on a weekly basis. Part of the p/s problem was a hose clamp that needed tightening. That cut the leak by half, meaning I only had to add fluid once every 2 wks. It took a while for A-Rx to slow the p/s leaks. Maybe 3,000+ miles. I just left it in there the entire time & kept adding fluid, & occassionally adding an extra 1/2 oz of A-Rx as the old stuff leaked out. I guess I maybe used 2 oz total. Then, when it finally slowed enough to where I could go more than a month w/o adding more fluid, I flushed it all out & refilled with new fluid. Does your 900 require Pentosin synthetic p/s fluid?
Anyway, since draining & refilling the '85's engine & tranny in Nov '04, I haven't needed to add ANY oil to either system! I think I flushed the p/s in Oct '04, & I just had to top it up (about 2 oz) for the first time last week. To be fair, the p/s only seems to be leaking when the temps drop down around 0°F. I'm guessing the really cold temps are shrinking all the parts enough let some fluid pass by. I'll have to wait for warmer weather to be sure. To say I'm pleased with the results would be an understatement!
I ran it in the engine of all 3 Saabs (the 3rd is a '99 9³SE auto), the manual trannies of the older 2, & the p/s of the oldest 1. The 9³ (2.0L turbo) currently has M1 5w-40 in the engine for 10k mile intervals & about 70% M1 (syn) ATF in the auto (currently being changed at 10k mile intervals, but I may stretch it out longer after this next one). The '90 (2.0L 16v NA) has M1 0W-40 & 2 oz A-Rx in the engine for 20k mile intervals. The '85 (2.0L 8v NA) has slightly used M1 5W-40 (it was the 2,000 mile rinse oil from the 9³'s A-Rx treatment) & 3 oz A-Rx in the engine for 20k mile intervals. Both 900s will get filter-only changes at 10k miles, & maybe an extra 1/2 oz each of A-Rx.
How's that for info overload? :-)
