I think the reason silicone grease is used on the ends is not because it is anything special, but because it is waterproof - most greases are somewhat water soluble. I think the Saab stuff is expensive just because it says Saab on it. One of the SBs says "silicone grease or marine grease" or something to that effect, so the choice isn't critical. The grease does two things, one is to grease the plastic pivot block so it may actually pivot (though not likely), the other to keep the metal arm from rusting and further increase friction.
BTW, I do not think the cables come lubed adequately internally, and suspect that greasing them heavily (slide the cable back and forth to work the grease inside) will greatly improve performance and life.
you can buy good silicon grease, in bulk, at most bearing & seal shops, either Dow 111 or no 7 (can't remember which is thicker) for about $7 for a big tube. Dive shops will have it, but probably more expensive, as will most industrial suppliers or McMaster Carr.
