I have never been able to be "behind the counter" and see how Tech II operates, but it certainly is possible that there is / was info coming into the ECU from the CKP Sensor that would have been a "giveaway" as far as indicating that it had "gone bad". Unfortunately the guys like me that end up being stubborn, stupid, etc. and try everything attemptable before taking it into the shop never really figure it out sometimes without access to the scanning tools, etc. that would make diagnosis much clearer. It is great to have this board, but I too hope to not steer future people astray after somewhat solving my own problem: many complex things go on at the same time to make these things run, and observing/checking all of those items is very difficult in order to isolate and diagnose a problem correctly. But this board provides a place to connect with others to do the best we can with the tools we do have ... MANY THANKS to the "experts" out there.
Oh, and the 15 to 60 min shutdown explanation makes real sense: I acutally was only having problems after 2+ hours in very cold conditions , mostly overnight, and when we were bumping down to -20 air temp, I was considering this "cold start problems". But the intermittent nature of this issue has been the most frustrating.
