Disclaimer - I am not a mechanic but I have a good "grip" understanding of my car since I have spent a lot of time in this BB looking for stuff, making notes, and getting involved in the SAAB-ownership aspect. By the way, I doubt it if it is the gas cap. Fuel in the pressure line - three items - fuel pump, fuel injector, and FPR. Backfire? In what context do you use backfire - idle is sputtering like it's about to die and returns to normal? For me backfire is pre-ignition - fuel is ignited before the "peak" of the combustion cycle since timing is over-advanced. That sound is similar to a shotgun blast that is if you have handled a live firearm. You'll hear that bang/boom from the tail pipe - not at the lower passenger side of engine unless you downpipe is loose or you have a hole in the cat converter or the flex pipe is busted.
Ok, enough of this since you have to focus on the Basics! Do you have a maintenance record of your car, aside from oil changes? You have the V6; hence, tensioner assembly/timing belt being replaced, there are a ton of posts regarding this item - don't take this for granted. Moreover, don't take this the wrong way but are you mechanically inclined and have a good set of metric sockets, wrench set T-bits, T-sockets and etc? If so, kindly do that BB search using those key words I gave you since those guys have experienced what appears is happening to your car. If not, go to the mechanic section of TSN and look for a SAAB specialist in your area. Moreover, you still have to do BB search using those key words. The posts will explain to you what is going on, and offer you insights in so far as an avenue whereby you can eliminate and narrow-down the problem/issue. Please understand that it is very difficult to offer comments since your "issues" appear to be broad. Understanding why your car is doing what it's doing is trial and terror/error. What I am trying to drive at is that one problem could be affecting the other. So, you need to go through the maintenance record and figure out what is done and what needs to be done. Those key words will address the how-to's of your car. good luck!
