you need to lubricate the cable properly at the head where it meets the pedal and at the end where it meets the tranny arm. The cable will rotate some under stress. The idea is to have it rotate with ease.

One of the sources of noise is the installation at the pedal end, as the plastic piece moves some in the area. Another source of noise is he small rubber boot around the end that attaches to the cable arm. When that rubber boot breaks you get the crunchy and annoying sound.

The cable might need a final adjustment before you are good to go. You can use the Anders method or tug hard on the cable by the fuse box in the engine bay. The Anders method is to press the pedal really hard and down to the bottom with the carpet removed and then let the pedal out super fast (move your foot to the side) so the pedal snaps into position violently while triggering the ratcheting mechanism.
