The trick is to wait for the machinery. If you have a weak synchro, you can either spend a boatload of money and replace several internal parts or you can just shift differenly to avoid grinding. Make you shifting more deliberate, with a slight pause in neutral between gears. Both shifting up and down. Also, shifting down, learn to double clutch and to properly match revs. This will improve your shifting technique in general, making you a smoother driver. Once you get used to it, your shifting will NOT be any slower.
I started doing all this since when I got into autocrossing in mid-90's. I can tell you that it has become second nature to me and I never notice the foot work or the shifting techniques while driving. Many people who have ridden with me comment on how smooth my shifting has become.
Like others have said, you can also try to change gear oil. I recommend that if you do this, you use *non-synthetic* motor oil 10W-30. Synchros will work much better with this oil compared to the new SAAB synthetic MTL that came in your car from the factory. The only drawback will be increased difficulty shifting in very cold temperature, as in 0'F overnight.
