I experienced a passenger side clunk for several months. I thought my strut mounts were bad, and replaced them. No change. Over time, the clunk got worse. I finally decided to disassemble my suspension again. I found that the strut insert (#3) was not held in position firmly by the top nut (or sleeve) (#4). The insert body was free to bounce up and down inside the McPherson strut assembly (#2).
I tightned the nut and like magic, all noise disappeared. I understand the nut is assembled at the factory with Loctite blue. I did not put any Loctite on the threads when I replaced the inserts two years ago. I applied Loctite this time!
