Placement of hands free cell holder on 5 speed

I just got one of those hands-free cell phone "Navigator" thingies that clamp/charge/speaker-fy the phone via the cig lighter socket. (Couldn't justify the $$ to do the Nokia-Saab stereo connection). Problem is, I can't seem to get the thing in a place that doesn't interfere with 5th gear. As I have one of those Saab pnone/accessory panels (attaches flush with passenger's footwell side of console), I've been trying to route a dual outlet lighter jack over there, drilling the panel to fit the new sockets. This is a pain in the a$$, and so I was wondering if anyone had succesfully mounted a "Navigator" on a 9-3 5 speed in some other, less labor intensive fashion.
Note: using the "Navigator's" included 'SUV extension' just makes the whole thing flimsy, as it increases the torque on the connection and the Saab lighter socket sleeve has a tendency to rotate within its retaining ring. Anyone know of a way to stabilize the lighter socket sleeve?
Ta!
