I have a 9-3 5speed, first it's obvious from this thread the "thing" you bought won't work, unless you don't want fifth gear :~)
Faced with the same problem with my small samsung 3500 phone, I have utilized the 6 inch loop strap. first put the strap on the bottom air vent knob, 2nd from there loop the phone over the top air vent knob. essentially hanging from the top knob. it's right there, you can dial away without it really moving around much, it's handy- just grap it with a quick flick and put it up to your ear. and lastly with my phone I can read the screen for messages, pages and calller ID. Although I am a strong advocate of the hands free and Microphone/ear cord.
It's one of those things is so simple, so cheap, and so obvious once you loop the strap around the vent knobs- even the knobs still work.
