Actually, my dealer says stay away from auction cars. Saabs are sold by the dealers for their owners and because the dealer knows the car, they can say with some assurance that car is good one. Another way to get a non-abused car is right here in the Saabnet classifieds.

No such thing that I know of. You'll find a lot of people lurk here and then come out with a decision and a car. Reading back helps sort out the various things you can benefit from including comparisions with the cars you mentioned, decisions on HOT SE vs base.....price and so on.

No. Depending on the one you buy and how you use it. My mechanics have been Maytag repairmen.

I'd be wondering whether the independents had been checked out on the new Trionic computer technology that comes with the Saab (and which can be chipped for stunning performance gains if you feel you need them.)

You know, you are perhaps the best purchaser of a Saab there is in economic terms. You have spotted a deal - now go after it! It is a fantastic idea.
