DISCLAIMER: My views in no way, shape or form are representative of the GM Corporation.
Having said that, I happen to work for GM at the R&D Center in Warren, MI. Saab has introduced alot of really neat things to GM (including the retractable roof on the upcoming SSR and active head restraints). In return, GM has done good things for Saab (like keep them in business, as someone else mentioned).
It is important to remember that cars change. Sometimes drastically, sometimes not. Take for example the next 7 series from BMW. Usually, this automaker makes subtle changes to their cars to have some continuity between model changes. But for the upcoming 7er, there is a HUGE change. I believe that this change is similar to what is happening with Saab. I also feel that Saab is still Saab, they just have to report to someone in Detroit now, instead of themselves. As far as brand management is concerned, there are people around who don't care for it ... but as with anything, sometimes, a few mediocre ideas can make everyone uncomfortable.
I will try to forward everyone's views on to my upper level management so that your voice can (hopefully) be heard.
