Before I go on, let me say that I'm an EXTREMELY happy owner of a 9-3--got a great deal on an off-lease '99 about 2 weeks ago. However, while my wife and I were looking around and flirting with the idea of picking up a brand new 9-3 or SE, we did a couple of test drives at Charles River Saab in Boston. Our immediate reaction after driving a base 2001 9-3 (auto) was that it was sluggish! Both of us were very surprised about this. At first, we thought that the ride might have been so tight and smooth that we didn't feel the acceleration of the car. After subsequent drives with the same car, we came to the conclusion that it must have something to do with breaking-in. The 9-3 that the dealer gave us for the test-drive looked like it was fresh off the boat, complete with the white plastic stuff covering the hood, roof and door panels.
Could it be that CR test drove a car that was in similar condition? If so, they should have known better. After test driving the abovementioned "sluggish" 9-3, my wife and I did many more test drives with both new and used 9-3s (including a standard SE conv. which I regret not buying) and NONE of them seemed sluggish at all. The 9-3 I have now is a wonderful ride and I couldn't be happier.
