You better get your reading glassed fixed because you are full of @@it at least as far as the '01's go. My 99 is under cover so I don't have access to that book right now.
'01 book page 249 -
2.0 Turbo 185 hp: 90 AON unleaded gasoline, minimum 87 AON
2.0 Turbo 205 bph and Viggen: 93 AON* unleaded gasoline, minimum 87 AON.
It goes on to say:
*If the car is filled with 90 AON Gasoline and the outdoor remp is above 77-86F a slight decrease in performance my be noticeable.
Minimum 87 to me means minimum 87. And if it is warm out premium is better but lower octane is useable.
I'm not putting "swill" in it as you say, if you take the time to read the post I put premium in both of my Saabs, but not because I am worried about damaging the engine, but for the maximum performance. You are simply not going to damage the engine with regular fuel - the knock sensors won't let it happen. And for those people who don't constantly drive their Saabs like some hopped up teenager borrowing daddy's car for the first time maybe regular or mid grade is all they really need, despite your misguided and misinformed point of view.
