Kris,
Sounds like the jerk who hit you is trying to pull a fast one. As you stated you would have to be going backward to hit someone and I'm sure you were not.
One word of advice in case you ever get in another accident where you clearly were not at fault is call the police and do not let the other driver leave until the police see what has happened. If they were clearly at fault you can have the officer cite them right there for a moving violation and they will give you a copy of the report. for example when I was rear ended in my 89 SPG I had the woman cited for failure to excercise "Care in Stopping" The police gave me a copy of the report and it made my life a lot easier.
Now in your situation you don't have a report but you have damage that is consistent with someone hitting you, not the other way around. Your insurnace company should be able to deal with things from there and you should not have to be the one dealing with Liberty Mutual. Keep pushing!!!
You are correct that in MA that you must insure your car, but that does not stop some jerks from driving without insurance. In that case your insurance kicks in (I think you have to pick up the deductable).
Good luck and keep us posted
PaulD
