I had a wonderful experience with Countryside Saab in March 2002, and while I'm paying even more than yourself, perhaps this is for the privilege of loving the people that I worked with and being able to walk away thinking that we had quite a win-win deal.
Now, I'm a college kid, and this is my first car, so I don't exactly have lots of money to throw around, so I wanted to save some money, but I wanted the dealership to make some money as well.
I worked with Tim S., who sold my mother a new '98 VW Passat from the VW side of that dealership 3 years ago. I told him that I was at college, writing my senior thesis paper, and on account of that paper, I wasn't going to have a lot of time to haggle and do paperwork. Very swiftly, he put me together a great deal, one that I feel was VERY fair, especially when he knew full well that I wasn't staying in Minnesota after college (and thus wouldn't be using Countryside for service) and that I was coming in during the last days of the March lease special, when Countryside was running really low on 5sp equipped premium pack 9-3s (I had 5 to choose from on March 29.)
In the end, knowing full well what the Invoice Price and Lease Package Incentives were (from edmunds.com), I believe we ended up splitting the difference between MSRP and Invoice right down the middle, 50-50, so that both of us could walk away from the deal very well pleased. I saved a couple hundred, they made a couple hundred. They've also spent a good $50 just FedExing me documents to sign, and FedExing me my new Minnesota license plates when they arrived.
Am I paying $15-$30 a month more than I "needed" to? Sure, but it was never my intent to squeeze the dealership for everything they're worth on my first purchase there. I still have a fantastic car, at a great price, and it's been a beautiful ride for 1,700 miles so far.
