On my 1999 HOT, I thought I had a leaky head gasket, too. I was strongly self-convinced that it was DEFINITELY the head gasket.

Went to SAAB, the dealership SVC. manager.....just like you .....

Made the appointment to have the head gasket replaced.

Called to see how my car was doing on the day of this service....

My mechanic--yes at the DEALER--put it under this previously described pressure test. After just over 5 hours, maybe even 6 hours-- the antifreeze began to drip.

SEE, I said as the coolant ran off the block....

It turned out to be the thermostat housing was leaking---after opening it up, the mechanic found 2 rubber thermostat gaskets in there!!

This may not be your situation. But, BOY OH BOY was I glad he had the presence to do this test first.

He very calmly said, that he always does this test first, before cracking into a cylinder head.

Now, as for item 2 on "acceleration" and my DISTINCTIVE views--spelled it right this time!

TECH 2 when used correctly is a TREMENDOUS tool. But the tool is only as informative as the level of competency of the mechanic behind it.

Your coolant leak, could have left air pockets in the system, that as you hard accelerate ---lead to preignition.

After the cooling system and/or head gasket (final determination) is made, see if this corrects your detonation, spark knock.

If no, then attach TECH 2 to your car and have the mechanic take "snapshots" of your engine under load. He should be able to diagnose your problem from this step.

If this is unclear, print out this post, and take it along to you dealership.

Be patient. Do the cooling system test first.

We all on this BB want to see you happy and back on the road.
