The amplifier is in the passenger's footwell area on the left hand side. You need to remove the glovebox to gain access to the panel on the passengers side of the center console to remove the panel that covers the amplifier.
If you disconnected the DIN cable from the head unit to the amplifier, the amplifier is not consuming power since the power on signal comes from the head unit. You could permanently disconnect the amplifier by disonnecting the plug at the amplifier, but you will need to do the above process to gain access to that area.
Is this an easy job? Not if you don't have experience. I wouldn't say it is a difficult job, but it is hard to say without knowing your skill level.
Judging by the way you were sweating out the removal of the radio, I would say to get a friend that has experience in re-wiring amplifiers and speakers. I've removed and installed probably almost 2 dozen stereos in my years so I wasn't concerned about installing the SA3 upgrade in my S model that was only 2 months old at the time. I probably would upgraded the door panel speakers before going through the trouble of re-wiring all of the speakers.
The SA3 specifications are as follows:
Head unit amplifier: 4 channels x 20 watts (80 watts total)
Auxillary amplifier: 2 channels x 40 watts (80 watts total)
So if you are only running the 4 main speakers you have 80 watts total, if you run all 6 including the door panel mid-subs, you have 160 watts total.
Good luck!
