there's a ton of information about installing aftermarket stereo systems, including MP3/CD players... you need to do the work and search for audio and stereo and MP3... plus check out the FAQ which has richard bevan's terrific overall guide to Saab 900/9-3 Audio...
short answer is that you can replace the stock head unit with a standard DIN unit (like a kenwood or sony or other unit that plays MP3's burned onto a CD), but unless you want to do a LOT of work, you'll lose the steering wheel controls...
if you have a 2001 9-3 (like i do) it may have come with subwoofers installed in the doors and powered by a separate HK amp... i find the bass from this setup isn't bad at all (unless you're looking for window shaking bass... and i mean shaking the windows of the cars next to you)... if you don't have the door speakers and amp installed, you may decide to do a component-type install with bass in the doors and tweaters in the dash...
btw, replacing the dash speakers is (1) easy and (2) the fastest way to get better sound... don't know about your system, but in my 9-3 the dash speakers were paper cone one-ways!... i replaced them with drop-in 3.5 inch Boston Acoustics (and a 2ohm 5watt resistor in series with each speaker to balance the difference in impedance between the stock 8 ohm speaker and most aftermarket 4 ohm drivers)
good luck... have fun... consider putting in a unit that can also contol an XM receiver... i did and haven't regretted it!
cheers
