If it looses charge, the pressure can drop to a point where a switch opens up which interlocks with the compressor control logic to prevent the compressor from running on a low charge.
The compessor also has a high temp switch that will fail if it cycles too often. That can be caused by a fault anti-frost switch. The evaporator will also not frost normally if the charge pressure is high enough. If the low side pressure was 17.5 PSI guage, the regrigerant would want to be around 32 degrees. If the low side pressure was 45 PSI, the refrigerant would be wanting to be at 50F which would not provide much cooling effect and is a mild state of overcharge. Not dangerous, just makes the AC seem weak.
