Brakes vs. clutch?? (long) Posted by JimBlake [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: "Bang drive" part deux (tad long)..., Drew, Mon, 14 Oct 2002 00:09:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Your description sounds like sticking brakes to me. Most cars I've owned have done that, usually after washing or driving thru rain if I park the car when they're wet. The rotors rust & stick to the brake pads. So if you can push it with your foot, what about when the engine's not even running? Don't start it, put it in neutral, & push. If it behaves the same then its got nothing to do with the clutch.
Handbrake - FYI, the handbrake does not use the same brake pads as the foot brake. The handbrake is a small drum brake contained inside the "hub" of the rear brake rotor. So if it sticks with or without setting the handbrake that means it can still be the main brakes.
When it happens next, don't just drive off. Just move the car about 18 inches, then look at your brake rotors. I bet you'll see a rusty spot about the size & shape of the brake pads. It gets polished off at the first couple stop signs.
You say your clutch "warbles"... Sounds like a warped disk or pressure plate. Same basic thing as warped brake rotors, but it should be unrelated to stuck brakes.
"That spring in the clutch?" I vaguely remember posting something about a broken spring in a clutch. This happened a long time ago in a '72 Datsun, but basically part of the clutch's hub broke & jammed up the clutch & pressure plate. I could push the pedal down but the clutch would not disengage. That doesn't sound anything like what's happening to your car.
