Today, while driving, the dash lights went crazy. At least:
/!\ lights (middle of speedo)and the gas empty lights went on, and the gas gage went right the empty. The SID (currently on DTE (distance to empty) drops to 0.
Here's what actually happened from the beginning:
Drove ~200 miles from Toronto to the US boarder (Port Huron), with ~18 miles left according to SID's "DTE". (I know.. kinda ballsy ;-).
Put 8 gal of gas in at Port Huron cuz it was expensive and 8 gal was minimum for a free touchless carwash.
Drove approx. 80 miles on interstate with no problem, watching "DTE" all the way, while it drops from ~260miles to ~160-180miles. Had to avoid some road construction stuff by swerving a bit at 75 miles/hour. Not a big issue, as I've driven faster and changed lanes faster than that before. A bell (or chime, I can't remember, as I was shocked to hell) signalled thru my music and I saw the gas gage dropped, while the !! light went up. DTE dropped to 0. However, the car kept going, and I had acceleration. I KNOW I put in 8 gal of gas, which is good for at least 160 miles not that long ago.
Another thing of note: I was near empty yesterday and put in 14 gal of regular gas (87 octane) (Noticed the power drop even without the A/C on!!) Before that, I've consistently used 91+ for at least 2 months.
My best guess is that because I was so close to being empty today, there was a slight air bubble trapped in the fuel gage/detection system and for a brief moment, the detector got no-gas, and thats why it went off and told SID I had no gas left. I was quite alarm, as I was in a construction zone, and no shoulders..) As I drove from there, the DTE and gas gage continue to go back up to what I think is normal (~170 miles remain).
Cars seems to drive fine, but I don't think I'll let it go under 30 miles remaining anymore.
(P.S. I know I really shouldn't let the gas tank go that low.. but I only do it on really long drives, and know that I will re-fuel as soon as I get empty.. In this case, the US side of the US/Canada boarder, where gas is much cheaper on the US side..)
