I can't help you with the fuel gauge problem but I thought you might want to know that even when the DTE reads 0 you have some 6 litres left.
I happen to know because I also live in a border zone where prices vary greatly. Once I was driving in Germany and reckoned that I could make it back to Luxembourg. About 80 km from the border (where there are always loads of petrol stations) the DTE said 60 km, so I decided to stop at the next petrol station. The thing is ... there weren't any! In the end I made it back to Luxembourg having driven about 15 km with the DTE reading 0 (not a pleasant feeling!). I filled her up - 65 litres (tank holds 70).
Rumour has it, though, that it's best to always keep her above 1/4 full because the last few drops at the bottom of the tank could contain impurities that you don't want clogging up your filter.
