Hi Hoagie Max,

The term refers to a technique used in manual transmissions to achieve smooth downshifts during aggressive driving. When downshifting during braking (say from 3rd -to - 2nd) on approach to a corner, if the revs are mismatched, the car will "jerk" badly as the rpm's of the engine races to catch-up with the new gear ratio selected in the transmission. If this interface is too violent, it can upset the car as it enters the corner. The heel-and-toe technique is a strategy to simulataneously step on the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal with your right foot so that you can blip the throttle when your other foot has pushed in the clutch. The idea is to match the "revs" of the transmission and the engine so that the clutch engagement is smooth and seemless. When mastered, it is one of the true joys of piloting a manual transmission when driving aggressively. You can start practicing just by trying to match the revs on downshifts - even when you are not braking. The strategy of rev-matching makes for very smooth shifts - even under aggressive driving... It makes every exit ramp a miniature driving school!

I have large feet (13) so I have never actually use my heel or toe - just the two sides of my foot on both pedals... my former BMW's were the absolute best at pedal placement - its not quite as easy with my '02 Aero.

This will soon be a lost art as the new manumatic systems make the manual tranny an anachronism... oh well, we don't set a manual choke in the morning either (as I did on my first Datsun Z and Toyota Land Cruiser).
