Ken,
For what it's worth I think you made a wise decision. I agree with some posters below that some kids don't appreciate it when they're given very nice items they didn't have to work for. But then again, I knew a number of people back in High School (1988-1992) who drove BMW's, Mercedes, 3000GT's, NSX, 300zx, etc....and most of them turned out ok.
The reality is if I had the means I would want my child (though I'm single and no kids as of now) driving the safest, most up to date car I could afford. The statisic I heard on NPR the other day is that while new drivers (age 16 - something I can't remember) make up 7% of drivers, they're involved in 14% of accidents. If I had a child and they died because they were driving some rust-heap w/ no airbags...or even a car with airbags but not as safe as possible - I could never forgive myself.
A friend of mine received a new Corvette for his 17th birthday in 1989...and he also received a few days of training at the Bob Bondurant (sp?) driving school. Now I don't agree w/ the choice his parents made (a fiberglass rocketship), however they knew he'd probably drive fast - and wanted him to be as safe as possible (again - in the fiberglass rocketship).
Just make sure your son appreciates what he has. Congrats on the great new car.
